Hi Families! The Kindermusik with Brenda studio is participating in Kindermusik International's "We Love Kindermusik" week! Here is a list of what is in the works so far!

COLORING CONTEST!

Submissions are due by February 18th and winners will be announced February 20th. The winner will receive a basket of Kindermusik goodies! ARC: Little Swimmers

Bring your little ones to the ARC for some swimming and fun! The ARC offers Little Swimmers throughout the year. You DO NOT have to be a member of the ARC to participate in Little Swimmers. Just drop in during the scheduled time, and for a buck, enjoy an hour of swimming fun!

Lend & Learn Toy Libraries provide a safe location in which young children and their parents can play with toys that develop their motor and cognitive skills. Our toys can be enjoyed at the library or borrowed for free. The toy libraries also provide opportunities for parents to link with other parents.

Come play at Lend & Learn and let your child's mind go to work!
Inside, there are designed areas for play, an outside playground, and an area for parents to check out toys and bring them home to enjoy for up to a month at a time!

Like many, I’ve loved scrapbooking for as long as I can remember. I’ve made quite a few scrapbooks in the past, but all the materials and add up! Now a HUGE Rubbermaid container that sits in my closet with loose stickers, tools and papers. With My Memories, everything is on the computer!

Since becoming a mother of 2, the last scrapbooking I’ve done was a baby album for my first born. Funny how you slack with the second child. I mostly resort to making photo books online but jumped at the chance to try out My Memories suite digital scrapbooking software.

After an easy, and pretty quick, download I started by choosing a pre-made layout that would fit my needs. I figured for a first try, using the pre-made templates would let me see just how user friendly the software can be. It passed with flying colors. I was able to make pages in about half and hour and tweaked a few things here or there to make them work best for what I had in mind.

Since I love blogging, I am excited to try out the many templates for my blog headers and graphics! The possibilities are endless.

Come and ride with Santa's elves as we make our way to the North Pole where Santa Clause is awaiting our arrival. Children are welcome to dress in their pajamas in the spirit of the holiday season. As we make our way to the North Pole Santa's elves will read stories and sing Christmas carols with the children. To make sure everyone is in the Christmas spirit snacks of cookies and hot chocolate will be served.

Once we arrive at the North Pole Santa will come aboard the train and will be ready to hear all about what you want for Christmas. There will be photo opportunities with Santa and he will have a small gift for each child to hold them over until the big day!

Shryocks Callaway Farms

The Shryock family has been farming in Northern Callaway County since 1889. We are the fourth and fifth generations of the family to work the land. Our current crops are corn, soybeans, and wheat. In 2002 we began inviting visitors to the farm to explore the corn maze, take a hayride, and just enjoy being in the country.

There are many activities available to visitors at Shryocks' Callaway Farms. The life-sized corn maze is a fun adventure for all ages. A hayride around the farm is a great setting for groups to interact.

We will not have a pick your own patch this year. We will have some pumpkins for sale in October from a local grower. Prices will vary depending on size.

The mission of Yoga to Grow is to provide yoga as a tool for children to discover the strength of their bodies, the power of their imagination and the peacefulness of a quiet mind.

Parent Child Yoga

Parent-Child Yoga Class is a wonderful way for parents to bond with their child in a playful, nurturing environment. These classes are especially designed for 20 months to 4 year olds. Together, parent and child will explore simple, gentle yoga poses and relaxation techniques.

Yoga with young children is imaginative, playful and varies from very active to quietly meditative. Stories, games, books and songs are used to engage the child's interest. In Parent-Child class, parents join along in the fun and share poses with their child.

Yoga for 3-6 Year Olds

Yoga for young children is taught through music,
natural experiences, and imagination. Yoga stories,
puppets, literature, songs and movement make yoga poses
and breathing fun for this age group. Yoga for 3-6 year
olds is an imaginative and lively class. Children are taught
basic simple breathing techniques and introduced to
relaxation.

Yoga for 6-10 year olds

Yoga for 6-10 year olds engages school age children in yoga using games, literature and interaction with peers. Students are encouraged to tune into the needs of their body and plan the pose sequence for each class. Yoga poses, breathing and guided meditation are an important part of each class. Children in this age range are very interested in relaxation and participate in a guided mediation to end their experience.

Yoga Play Day

Spend the morning with your friends sharing imaginary and creative play experiences, songs, stories, yoga and relaxation. Yoga Play Day is designed to allow young children to experience a yoga class in a playful and fun atmosphere. This monthly class is a great way to try out a yoga experience. Parents are welcome to stay and join in on the fun.

Yoga Story Time is a lively, active class designed for young children of all ages and their parents. Join us each month as we explore yoga through songs, books and stories. The 35th season of the annual Shelter Gardens Concerts Series begins on June 12, 2011 with a performance by the Columbia Community Band.

The library’s summer reading program is a fun way to stay engaged in reading and learning over the summer. The program is FREE and there are versions for all ages, from the youngest babies to kids, teens and even adults.

This year’s themes are all about travel, so climb aboard at whatever level suits you and your family! Reading incentives available July 5 and while supplies last.

TINY TRAVELERS

Birth to Age 5 / June 6-August 6
Parents will get a calendar and stickers to use as you read with your children and do simple activities like having a picnic. Complete the program, and, beginning July 6, you’ll receive a free book.

ONE WORLD, MANY STORIES

Ages 5-12 / June 6-August 6
Kids who sign up to travel through books will be challenged to read for 20 hours and do 10 of our suggested activities. Check back in at the library over the summer to attend programs, get more books and show us your progress. When you're halfway done, come in and get a free balsa airplane. If you complete the program, you’ll get a library messenger bag (available starting July 5).

GROUP SUMMER READING

We’ve put together a special version of summer reading that’s easy to do with a small group of kids like a child-care center or a scout troop. Do eight of the suggested activities together, and your group will receive some free books and every participant will receive a small reward.

Landmark Moment: Rock Bridge State Park

Just minutes from Columbia, Rock Bridge Memorial State Park gives visitors the chance to scramble, hike and bicycle through a scenic environment – and lets them peek into Missouri’s underworld. The park contains some of the most popular hiking trails in the state and also offers solitude while hiking in the Gans Creek Wild Area. Visitors can also see a large cave system with its rock bridge, sinkholes, a spring and underground stream at the Devil's Icebox. You can explore Connor's Cave in the light of the opening for a taste of the underground world.

Pack your lunch on a warm day and head out to RB State Park for some exploring in the woods! Walk or bike the trail and view the rock bridge. There is even a COLD cave known as the Devil’s Icebox that you can walk into! Picnic sites, scattered throughout the park, offer a quiet place to enjoy lunch or rest after a day of hiking. Sensory Sensitive Saturdays

Attention families touched by autism and other disabilities!

Sensory Sensitive Saturdays (SSS) in Columbia, Missouri was started by University of Missouri-Columbia Occupational Therapy Students during a summer course in 2009. The students wanted to serve children with Autism and their families. About every other month, Hollywood Theaters opens their doors early on a Saturday morning, especially for children with Autism and other disorders and their families and friends. The lights are left on dim, the volume is lowered, and the children can bring their own snacks, blankets, and pillows. They are free to move around the theater as they need or take breaks in the lobby. They can even sing along or talk back to the movie!

Where: Hollywood Theater

Prices: $6 for children, $6.75 for adults and $6.25 for seniors

Who: Children and their parents who have autism or other disabilities

Our family visited Pick & Pick last Spring and had a wonderful first time experience! We were warmly greeted by the owners when we pulled up. We hopped on a golf cart and they took us to the asparagus fields (what is in season right now). They explained how to pick the asparagus and gave us a bucket to fill. After filling our bucket with all the asparagus we could find, we walked the grounds looking at the different crops. We will defiantly be back for strawberries, blackberries and corn later in the season!

If you like good home flavored rootbeer then this is a place for you!

Never been to Mugs Up? It is off the Business Loop, tucked in behind El Maguey on Orange Street. Park your car anywhere on the lot and the ladies will come to your car to take your order. I personally love their chili cheese dogs w/ onions, cheese fries and large root beer. My 2.5 year old enjoys a cheese dog. They also have "Zip Burgers", which I hear are like sloppy joes without the sauce (I have never had one since the hot dogs are yumo). If you're looking to get your junk-food fix at an old drive-up style establishment, this place is worth checking out.

Landmark Moment: MU's Columns

As spring-like weather approaches, one of my favorite Columbia landmarks to let my son run some energy off is at MU's campus columns. Great spot for picnic lunches and to catch up on a good book or magazine while watching the kids run free.

HISTORY: The traditional symbol of the University of Missouri is the row of six Ionic columns. The Columns once supported the portico of Academic Hall, the first building erected on campus. Academic Hall was built between 1840 and 1843 from plans drawn by A. Stephen Hills, designer of the Missouri State Capitol. It consisted of a domed central section of three stories with two wings and housed both educational and administrative facilities. Brick for the building was fired on campus. Limestone for the Columns was obtained from the nearby Hinkson Creek Valley and was hauled to the building by ox-drawn carts.

On Jan. 9, 1892, Academic Hall was destroyed by fire and the Columns were all that remained. In August 1893 the Board of Curators voted to remove the Columns, considering them not only unsafe but unsightly. However, supporters of the Columns rallied to their defense, and after inspection showed the foundations were safe, the Board voted to retain them in December 1893. Now the Columns stand as a beloved part of

MU's campus.

Landmark Moment: ARC

Landmark Moment: Magic Tree

A Holiday Columbia landmark you don't want to miss!

The Magic Tree has been a crab apple tree in Columbia, Missouri lit by Will Treelighter every holiday season since 1995. Each year in the fall Will has set to work wrapping every branch with mini lights creating an ever more elaborate spectacle that generates increasing interest from surrounding communities. That interest has led to such an influx of admirers to the little neighborhood which has hosted the Magic Tree that Will found it necessary to seek a new home for his creation.

Starting with this 2010 holiday season you will now find the Magic Tree at its new host neighborhood, the Village of Cherry Hill, located in Columbia, MO at Scott Blvd. and Chapel Hill Roads. The new tree is, appropriately enough, a Cherry Tree.

The Magic Tree is lit every evening from 5pm to 11pm from Thanksgiving Eve to Epiphany (January 6th).

Parents As Teachers: Screening Services

I took advantage of this great program through Parents As Teachers this morning with my toddler. Although we were cut from the PAT home visits program over the Spring, I was excited to hear that we still qualified for the FREE screening. It was a great experience and I was happy that I called to make the appointment. We will defiantly be back for his 3 year old screening next Fall!

Prior to the appointment, the staff asks if you would pick up and complete the paperwork before your scheduled appointment to help save on time. You will also need a copy of your child's immunization record.

The Early Childhood Department of Columbia Public Schools provides FREE screening services for children(6 months to kindergarten entry).

Why have your child screened?

Screening is a quick and effective way to look at a child in comparison with other children his age. It can determine whether or not a child is developing within the normal range for his age.

Who can be screened?

Infant/Toddlers: (6 months to 34 months of age). Call 214-3955 to schedule an appointment for your child. Screenings are held at the Parents as Teachers office, 555 Vandiver Drive Columbia, MO. This service is for any infant/toddler who is NOT receiving home visits from Parents as Teachers. PAT families have screenings conducted in their homes during personal visits.

Preschoolers: (36 months to Kindergarten entry). Call 214-3585 to schedule an appointment for your child. Screenings for this age are held at the Field Building, 1010 Rangeline Columbia, MO. This service is for all children who reside in the Columbia PublicSchool District. Screening results for this age group can be used to determine eligibility for the Title I Preschool admission and Early Childhood Special Education services.

Join the fun at the Hearnes Center for the annual Tiger Night of Fun -Columbia's safe alternative to door-to-door trick or treating! Children will enjoy activities, games, and treats - for FREE!

Tiger Night of Fun is a free event for the whole family. The activities are specifically designed for children sixth grade and under.The event promises all sorts of ghostly activities, including fun games and lots of candy.
